A delegation of Canada headed by Hon'ble Mr. William Crosbie, Co-Chair of the Working Party on Mediation in Family International Law in the context of Malta Process along with H.E. Mr. Greg Giokas, the High Commissioner for Canada, called on the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and Hon’ble Mr. Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, the Chief Justice Designate in the Supreme Court, Islamabad today i.e. 02.08.2013.
Hon’ble Mr. Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani is also Co-Chair of the working party on Mediation in Family International Law appointed by the Hague Conference.

Welcoming the delegation, Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan said “it is an honour to receive such a high level delegation from Canada. Exchange of delegations is always healthy and a good tradition to take advantages from each other’s knowledge and for reform of respective systems.”

The Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry told the delegation about the Human Rights cases involving the issues of violation of personal rights of individuals and the relief is being provided to the applicants without observance technicalities. The victim approaches the Court just mentioning the grievance on a plain paper. Supreme Court takes up the cognizance of the matter and issues directions to relevant authorities to redress the grievance.

He also stated that Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) is resorted to in Pakistan whereby people not only get relief through mediation but the burden of Courts is also reduced and the disputes are settled amicably. He also quoted some cases of cross border mediation between the Supreme Court and the Canada in family cases wherein, relief was granted.

The Chief Justice also apprised the delegation that Justice Jillani, the Chief Justice-designate has also decided many cases through mediation. He further told them that Justice Jillani is about to takeover as Chief Justice of Pakistan and he is sanguine that Justice Jillani will take effective measures to advance mediation. The Chief Justice told the delegation that Supreme Court of Pakistan as an institution has played vital role in dispensation of justice. He also lauded the role played by the other institutions of the State. He stated that rule of law must prevail in our country and our country must be governed according to Constitution and rule of law. About terrorism, the Chief Justice said that it is a great menace having no principles that has hampered the economic growth of our country but INSHALLAH very soon this problem will be overcome and our country will make progress in terms of economy and stability.

Meanwhile, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, the Chief Justice-Designate also briefed the delegation.

The delegation reciprocated the sentiments and said that they are inspired by the superior judiciary of Pakistan and role played by the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. They further stated that the Chief Justice is also well known for his judgments. 

The Hon’ble Chief Justice also presented shield to the delegates as a token of respect and gesture of goodwill.
