HCJP TAKES NOTICE OF PANCHAYAT VERDICT OF GANG RAPE WITH WOMAN IN MUZAFFARGARH

The Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani took notice on a press clipping of “Daily Dawn” under the heading “Panchayat returns, orders gang-rape” regarding an incident in which a Panchayat was accused of ordering gang-rape of a 40-year-old woman in revenge for her brother’s alleged affair.

The incident took place a week ago when a villager sought the formulation of a Panchayat after he accused a relative of his, of having an affair with his wife. The accusers cried revenge and forced to bring his sister to the site where the Panchayat was held. Police and witnesses said the Panchayat hearing lasted for few minutes. The Panchayat leader, identified as Nawaz, sentenced the woman to be raped by the men from the aggrieved party. Woman was taken to a room where a man belonging to the complainant’s side stripped and hit her.

Taking notice of the incident the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mr. Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani passed the following order:-

“Report be called from the Inspector General of Police, Punjab about the news item that a “Punchayat” directed that a forty years old woman should be subjected to gang rape for revenge of her brother’s illicit liaison with some woman. The report shall specifically comment on the veracity of the news and the action taken by the Police. The report shall be submitted by or before Tuesday (04.02.2014)”
